Happiest Baby on the Block
Happiest Baby on the Block
Text
The Happiest Baby on the Block is an easy way to learn how to sooth the crying or colicky babies. You don’t have to suffer! There is a solution.
Babies cry for a reason- it helps them communicate so they can survive. But when a baby cries all of the time it can cause:
Stress
Depression
Breastfeeding problems
Shaken Baby Syndrome
Dr. Harvey Karp discovered that human babies are born three months before their brains are fully developed and therefore miss what he calls the fourth trimester.
He also found that babies are born with a Calming Reflex that can be turned on just by mimicking the environment that the baby was used to when he or she was in the womb. These are known as the 5 S’s.
The 5 S’s
Swaddling- Nurturing touch is the most calming. Avoid overheating and loose blankets. Remember to feed the baby 8-12 times a day.
Side Lying Position- Always support baby’s head. Side/stomach position is the best way to calm a crying baby but always put infant on back for sleep.
Shhh- White noise loud enough to match volume and vigor of baby’s cry. Babies are used to the sounds in the womb and they were as loud as a vacuum!
Swinging- Motions are fast but tiny, baby’s head stays in line with body- like a jiggle. You can use a sling or soft baby carrier, sit on a birth ball or rocking chair, dance, or take a brisk walk outside with your baby. When baby is in a swing make sure he or she is strapped in and reclined back. Never shake a baby out of frustration. If frustrated, take a break.
Sucking- Breasfeed or allow baby to suck on a clean finger or pacifier. Avoid nipple confusion. Wait until nursing is well established before using pacifiers or bottles.
